However, a month after his passing, Holmes’s first wife disclosed in an interview that John Holmes had arrived at her home with blood splatter all over him. She claimed that John told her that he witnessed the murders after leading the apparent assailants inside the house and watched the murders occur. Since the event occurred in the early morning hours, no phone calls were made to the police until at least 12 hours after the fact. Movers who were working next door had heard audible moans coming from the Wonderland house and soon discovered a seriously injured Susan Launius laying on the bed next to her deceased husband. It was said that while the home was known for hosting drug-fueled parties, neighbors assumed the loud noises and screams were just another party. Just days after the attack, the Los Angeles Police Department investigated the murders and searched the house for evidence.

Recent court filings show the court-appointed public guardian failed to file the annual accounting for the trust, leaving the family's finances opaque. Much of the $600,000 in private donations has been kept from the siblings. County officials, citing court-ordered secrecy, have refused to provide ABC News with any information about the trusts, including how much money has been distributed to the Turpin children and the justification for refusing some requests for financial assistance made on behalf of the children. "They have been victimized again by the system," Mike Hestrin, the Riverside County district attorney, told ABC News' Diane Sawyer in an interview for the 20/20 special event, "Escape From A House Of Horror." Melissa Donaldson, the county's director of victim services, told the network the children "felt betrayed'' by the county.

While the Wonderland murders still remain unsolved to this day, many of those who were connected in some way are no longer living. But that may not mean that some of the spirits of the Wonderland house are not done telling the story of what really happened here. While you may not be able to get inside the home itself, don’t be surprised if things start to feel a little eerie if you happen to be walking around Wonderland Avenue in Los Angeles. Prosecutors said the children were often chained to their beds, permitted to shower only once a year and barely feeding them, leaving them woefully malnourished.
After Rescue From Perris ‘House of Horrors,' Riverside County Asks ‘Where are the Siblings Now?'
In interviews airing this month on ABC, Jordan Turpin, now 21, said she had been released without warning from extended foster care and left to fend largely for herself. Riverside County announced Friday it has hired a former federal judge to investigate services and treatment provided to the 13 Turpin siblings who were rescued from a torturous home in Perris four years ago. After a Nov. 9 meeting of the county's Board of Supervisors, Chairwoman Karen Spiegel, the county's top elected official, declined to discuss specifics about what has transpired with the Turpin children since they were rescued.

They say that the very people responsible for actively caring for the Turpins simply did not do their jobs. The historic Doheny Mansion is featured as the home of medium Shaun San Dena. The house is used in the opening scene dating back to 1969 in Pasadena and again in Shaun’s death scene. You can tour the Doheny Mansion once it’s open to the public again for just $20. While the majority of the movie was filmed on sound stages at MGM Studios in Culver City, the house that was used for exterior shots of the hellish Freeling home can be found in Simi Valley.

One thing that stood out during the investigation was a print of a left-hand that apparently belonged to Holmes. Even if you’ve just moved in or lived there awhile, you cannot imagine what happened in the past with someone who lived there.

"One adult -- that was a minor, now an adult -- she has reported...one foster parent telling her she understands now why her parents chained her up," Donaldson said. Chang said he "welcome[s] an independent and comprehensive inquiry into the care, services, and placement provided to the 13 Turpin siblings by Riverside County departments." One of the siblings, 29-year-old Joshua Turpin, said he struggled to access funds for needs as simple as day-to-day transportation. Reports detailing the children's well-being, records accounting for the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised by strangers, and other documents in the court filing remain sealed.

The five children had even been adopted by that family in October 2019, the same time-period in which the alleged abuse was occurring. ChildNet declined to provide details about the vetting of the family, citing confidentiality laws. ChildNet is part of a larger county social services system that experts say had a history of failing to protect abused children even before the Turpins entered the picture in 2018. Officials refused to explain what money, if any, has been spent.
Laurel’s House of Horror occupies the “Old Movie Theater” cinema complex, nestled in the back corner of Laurel Centre Mall. The historic theater was abandoned by its former occupants years ago. Having had their own paranormal experiences on the property, the owners first invited the Chesapeake Ghost Hunters to do an analysis of the property.
Melissa Donaldson, the Director of Victim Services in Riverside County, said some of the children told her they "felt betrayed" by the county. "Did we see kids having to not have a safe place to live or stay at times? Yes. Did they have enough food at times? They did not,'' Donaldson said. "That is unimaginable to me -- that we could have the very worst case of child abuse that I've ever seen, and then that we would then not be able to get it together to give them basic needs,'' Hestrin said.
During their investigation, they found that there are indeed signs of other-worldly activity at the location. Since then, many other ghost hunting groups have spent time investigating and observing. Most recently, Charm City Paranormal has started to document their own experiences and activity in the complex. The creepy, old theater, home now to haunted attractions, is indeed a bona-fide haunt on its own. Laurel’s House of Horror and Escape Room has DC and Maryland’s scariest haunted attractions, all built inside of an abandoned movie theater. Five Turpin children remained in that home for three years while the alleged abuse took place. A lawyer for one of those family members said, "The family are devastated by these charges. At this point, we do not know the basis for these charges, and my client is denying these charges are true."
According to public records reviewed by ABC News, ChildNet has in recent years been the subject of dozens of investigations into allegations of verbal and physical abuse in its foster homes -- many of which have been substantiated by state investigators. "You rarely hear folks like you speaking out publicly about your work. This is the exception," ABC News correspondent David Scott told Donaldson as she explained what the last four years have been like for the Turpin children. "Did we see kids having to not have a safe place to live or stay at times? Yes. Did they have enough food at times? They did not," Donaldson said. "They had to go to churches and eat because they didn't know how to manage money ... and some without housing at times." But advocates and several of the Turpins themselves have come forward to share troubling tales of their plight.
